About the Event

The FOREA Webinar Series The Orthoptist’s Guide to Preparation, Presentation, and Publication of a Clinical Research Project is back! Join us February 19, 2022 for a two hour webinar titled: "Prose, Powerpoint, and Print: How to Share Your Work With the World!"  This interactive workshop will feature Gill Roper-Hall, Dr. Burt Kushner, and Kyle Arnoldi as they take us through medical writing, presenting, and publishing.  The session will be moderated by Rachael Jenkins, CO.

Abstract: The primary missions of clinical research are to (1) advance knowledge within the field and (2) improve patient care. In this, the clinician and the researcher work together in partnership. The role of the investigator is to develop and test a hypothesis. To a researcher, success is a data set that supports the hypothesis. But unless those results are disseminated effectively and efficiently to the target audience, it is as if the experiment did not occur. One cannot achieve these objectives without successful publication and/or effective public speaking in a forum available to the clinician. As such, the final step in a successful clinical research project requires communication skills.

In the first section of this webinar, Gill Roper-Hall will address the art and techniques involved in giving an effective presentation of one’s clinical research before a live audience. These include disclosures, etiquette, timing, recognitions, and audience interaction as well as practical suggestions for the most effective format to display the visual material.

The second half of the webinar will focus on medical writing and publication. Kyle Arnoldi will present a brief review of basic technical writing skills, article organization, and recommended style. Dr. Kushner will discuss what an editor looks for in a submission, the review process, copyright and permissions, and distribution of the completed work. Read the full abstract here.
